Easter Sunday Sermon Notes
This is a little different this morning for all of us
I can’t remember ever not being in a church building on Easter Sunday Morning. The church building is empty this morning just like the tomb where Jesus was laid. But the church is very much alive today because Christ is Alive. He has risen…If we were in the same building today, you would shout back with excitement…He has risen indeed.
This is my first Easter that I have not preached in a building and not the last.
This message cannot be Confined, Constrained, or Controlled
This is a message that will change that has changed the world … may this message today… change us.
We are more alive today than we have ever been. We have been landed several blows in the last month….but you need to hear me say.
No matter how difficult and dark life can be….The sun will come out…we will get through this … Life is worth it, if for no other reason ——Because Jesus Lives!
And because He lives … We can face Tomorrow…because He lives all fear is gone. Because I know who holds the future…Life is worth the living just because He Lives.
I couldn’t share this message today from my kitchen table sitting down. This is a message that must be delivered standing up.
He is Risen …He is Alive … My Jesus has defeated death! He has conquered death…Oh it was difficult on Good Friday – when the light of the world went out.
But Easter is a message of Hope and Triumph
The light of the world is been turned back on and there isn’t anything that can ever make it go out again.
New Living Translation
The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone.
Luke 24:1-12 – why do you look for the living, among the dead?
Read this with me….verse 1
On the first day of the week, very early in the morning,
Some of you got up real early for our sunrise reflection with Pastor Gordon. Some very meaningful thoughts were shared with us.
As they (women) made their way in the dark, to the tomb where Jesus has been laid to rest, they did do with very heavy hearts.
How many of our listeners today have felt what feels like to have a heavy heart?
Life is heavy…Life is hard…They had entered the early stage of grief. Their hopes and dreams had crumbled…
They were mourning the (loss) of their Lord. The past few days, were the most difficult days of their lives. Talk about an emotional roller coaster.
Over the past several weeks…we have been mourning the loss of that other world we use to know. It was as if we went to bed and woke up to a different world. Our world changed overnight.
We are not alone is our grief, in our loss, in our loneliness, or in our changing world.
The women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
They went to the tomb expecting to find things the way that they were left. Jesus was dead and they were showing up to anoint his dead body.
But when they arrived…things were not the way they were the night before.
The Stone was rolled in front of the tomb and guarded by soldiers.
2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 While they were (wondering) about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning (stood beside them)
In our darkest moments…we have a Jesus who is standing with us…he is standing beside us!
5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them,
“Why do you look for the living among the dead”
Oh may He shed some light on our lives and in our hearts today. May our changing world be used to change us.
You are not going to find life among the dead
Where are we looking for meaning and purpose of life? Many are looking in all the wrong places. Some of you who are listening to this message today, and you still haven’t found what you are looking for. Have we been placing our hope and trust in all the wrong things?
What really matters to you…Faith, Family, and friends. In that order for me.
We are all guilty of getting too comfortable with a world that is passing away. We have been planning and investing in things that are not eternal or forever.
1 John 2:17 (NIV)
The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
Maybe you are (wondering) what just happened? In the course of just a few weeks everything has changed.
Where can I find peace, joy, purpose, meaning, fulfillment in life?
1 Peter 1:18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from (the empty way of life)
handed down to you from your ancestors,
Life is empty without Christ! The empty way of life…we are trying to fill our lives.
I have lived long enough to know that Jesus is the only one that is going to fill your heart.
6 He is not here; he has risen!
For if he was still there…we would have some even bigger problems than we have now. The impossibility of experiencing Jesus in our lives…is a living hell.
But because he lives…and only because He lives…this Possibility can become reality for us today.
Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 7 ‘The Son of Man must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’ ”
The cross had to happen! There was no other way to put us back into a right relationship with God the father.
8 Then they remembered his words.
They remembered and received his words (vs. 8)
Whose words are we listening to and believing day?
9 When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them who told this to the apostles.
They reported the empty tomb (vs.9)
11 But they did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.
Their message sounded like nonsense and was not believed or received.
1 Corinthians 1:18 (NIV)
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
The Death, Burial, and resurrection is what makes salvation possible this morning.
Romans 10:8-10 (NIV)
The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved
12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves, and he went away, wondering to himself what had happened.
We have a God who is still Rolling Stones
There are distractions, obstacles and challenges in our lives that keep us from truly living!
Christ desires for you to live life to its fullest!
We have a God who defeated Death / That is where our hope rests this morning.
I’ve said it before…a dead Jesus isn’t going to do me any good. Thanks be to God …I’m not praying to a dead Jesus. He is very much alive. I challenge you this morning on the Easter Sunday morning as we live in an ever changing world to put your faith, hope, and trust into the hands of a never changing God.
Let’s pray –
